REPORT: Spireites cling on to secure second consecutive home victory

Chesterfield came from behind to secure their second home victory on the trot against fellow strugglers Aldershot Town.

A slow start saw the Spireites go a goal down through 21-year-old Ethan Chislett in the 12th minute but Scott Boden put proceedings level for Liam Mandeville to go on to get a winner ten minutes into the second half.

John Sheridan made two changes to the side that drew 1-1 at Hartlepool in midweek, with Scott Boden and Liam Mandeville returning to the side, meaning Mike Fondop and Charlie Wakefield had to settle for the bench.

The visitors started brightly and had an opportunity when they played the ball right through Chesterfield’s midfield for tall striker Shamir Mullings to put his first effort of the afternoon wide.

The Shots took the lead 12 minutes in when Shwan Jalal could only palm out Harry Panayiotou’s strike into the path of Ethan Chislett who struck home.

Despite left chasing the game again, Chesterfield responded well to going a goal down and worked hard to try and claw back an equaliser.

Danny Searle’s side had the opportunity to double their lead when Mullings somehow headed over from a few yards out.

Just a minute later, Mitch Walker was brought into action by Joe Rowley, who’s effort was kept out by the legs of the Aldershot ‘keeper.

After a good few chances, Chesterfield deservedly found an equaliser with five minutes to go of the first half. Liam Mandeville crossed a low ball into Boden who slotted home to level proceedings going into the second half.

Just five minutes into the second half action the away side were awarded a penalty when Jalal brought down Mulings inside the area. Panayiotou stepped up to the spot, striking his effort way off-target.

Panayiotou had another chance to take the lead shortly after when he found himself one-on-one with Jalal but couldn’t find his way past the Spireites’ ‘keeper who kept it out with his chest.

Chesterfield took the lead in the 56th minute, when Mandeville slotted home, after skipping through the Shots defence. Boden with the assist.

Sheridan made a double substitution not long after the hour mark, switching his strike force, with Tom Denton and Boden being swapped for Fondop and Anthony Spyrou.

It was an edgy last 20 minutes for the Spireites who dropped deeper and deeper, managing to keep the Shots out to secure their second victory of the season.

Chesterfield: Jalal, Yarney, Evans, Hollis, Rowley, Gevaro, Wedgbury, Weston, Mandeville, Boden, Denton.

Unused Substitutes: Coddington, McGlashan.

Attendance: 3,657 (169 away)
