Amari Morgan-Smith’s double against Southport sent the Reds to fourth in the Vanarama National League North.
Southport travelled to the Impact Arena touting the best defence in the league, but Morgan-Smith managed to break through with his fifth and sixth goals of the season.
Morgan-Smith now sits as the second top goal scorer in the league, having scored as many goals as the club he left last summer
The first half never truly got going, with the strong defence of Southport and the quality of the Alfreton attack ruling each other out.
Southport had the best defence in the league heading into the game, but the Reds managed to break them down.
After a quiet first half, the Reds found a break through early in the second. Dom Smith knocked the ball on from a free-kick into the path of Morgan-Smith who finished expertly.
The forward notched his second of the afternoon from a corner, raising well to head home from close range.
But Alfreton’s defence at home this year has been incredible, conceding just the one goal all year at the Impact Arena.
Home has become fortress for the Reds this year, having won three and drawn one of their four home fixtures this year.
The Reds now sit just four points off the top of the National League North with an away trip to Kidderminster Harriers.
Alfreton Town: Atkinson, Clackstone, Wilde (c), Lynch (East 51), Killock, Qualter, Thacker, Smith, Clarke (Tomlinson 87), Morgan-Smith, Johnson.
