REPORT: Late Dawes strike sends Belper Town through to the next round of the FA Cup

Updated: Oct 8, 2019

Belper Town Manager Grant Black named the same starting eleven from last weeks 1-0 win against Stocksbridge Park Steels, Charlie Dawes returned but was named as a sub.

With eight minutes on the clock Belper Town had a throw in on the right side just outside the penalty area, Kyle Bryant played a short throw in to Danny South and South played a short pass back to Bryant and Bryant crossed the ball into area and found Alex Peterson. Peterson’s header looped over Goal Keeper Jonathan Flatt and the ball went into the bottom corner of the goal to make it 1-0 to Belper.

After falling behind after eight minutes Rushall had more possession of the ball throughout the first half and the defence of Belper Town held strong to stay in the lead going into the halftime break.

At the beginning of the second half Rushall made two changes which made a difference for them as they started the second half the stronger side.

On the 61st minute Rushall had a free kick on the right hand side, the ball was played from the right and was headed to Jonathan Letford and Letford tapped the ball home into the empty net to level the scores.

After getting the equaliser Rushall were the better team going forward for the next eleven minutes but the Belper Town defence held on.

On the eighty second minute Danny South played a fantastic ball forward to Charlie Dawes, Dawes ran down the right hand side and struck the ball first time and the ball went into the middle of the goal and Belper Town made it 2-1 with eight minutes to go.

Belper Town managed to see out the last few minutes of the game plus the six minutes of added time without any major scares to book a place in the 4th Qualifying Round of the FA Cup.
