REPORT: Dronfield gain solid win over league form team

Updated: Sep 29, 2019

Dronfield Town rose to 11th in the Northern Counties East League Division One table with victory over form side Nostell MW.

The visitors had only lost once in the league so far this season but more than met their match against a Town side that were outstanding in defence.

An open and even first half played out. Meynell’s cheeky backheel saw the ball clawed away by Town keeper Lewis Naylor in the early stages and Naylor followed that up by pulling off a good save to his left from Teasdale seven minutes later.

Danny Wood had an appeal for a penalty waved away on the quarter of an hour mark and the same player managed to head over Nostell keeper Rusling after a long ball from Ash Rawson only to see his effort slow down before reaching the goal.

Bebbington received a yellow card for a late challenge on 35 minutes but neither side could break the deadlock by half time in changeable weather conditions.

It was the home side who went in front on 54 minutes. Callum Mawbey broke from central midfield to great effect and fed Mark Fereday, who placed his low shot firmly past Rusling to put Dronfield ahead.

Nostell made immediate changes but it was to little effect as Town went on to dominate the rest of the half. Mawbey shot low and hard at Rusling on 74 minutes and in another excellent move just four minutes later, Ord squared to the same player who stung the Nostell keeper’s hands from fully 20 yards.

At the other end of the pitch, the Dronfield defence of Bebbington, Hill, Mintoft and Bovill were outstanding in keeping Nostell at bay aided by a very hard-working midfield performance.

Nostell’s only real effort of the half came deep in added time when Waldron burst through but pushed his shot wide.

An equaliser for the visitors would have been a travesty as Town thoroughly deserved the three points and will look to take the momentum from this win into another home fixture next Saturday when Hall Road Rangers are the opponents.

Next Saturday’s game has been designated a free admission game and Dronfield will hope to secure a bumper crowd as they look to continue their rise up the Division One table.

Dronfield Town: Naylor, Bebbington, Bovill, Rawson, Mintoft, Hill, Chappell, Mawbey, Fereday, Wood, Ord.

Nostell MW: Rusling, Kilburn, Waldron, Cowgill, Meynell, Almond, Scargill, Teasdale, Ward, Reece, Owen.
