REPORT: Dronfield bombed out of Derbyshire Cup as Glossop run in five second half goals

Dronfield Town bombed out of the Derbyshire Senior Cup at the second round stage, conceding five goals in an astonishing second half against Glossop North End. The game was evenly poised until the hour mark, whereupon five goals in twenty minutes saw the Hillmen through to the next round. A Tom Lawless brace and a hat-trick from Lewis Reilly, including two goals from the penalty spot, capped the rout as Dronfield were left to focus on their league campaign, starting with the visit of Nostell Miners Welfare to the HE Barnes Stadium on Saturday.

Dronfield made five changes from the side that had performed so well at Maltby Main in their previous encounter. Neither side got a foothold in the early stages despite the immaculate playing surface in S18.

Glossop opened with strikes from Amarzou and McMahon that both went wide of the mark and Dronfield followed suit through Matty Ord.

North End’s Lewis Reilly tried his luck from half way with Town stopper Lewis Naylor off his line but once again, the aim was somewhat astray.

Dronfield competed with their Step Five rivals however and on 24 minutes, a swinging cross from the right by Cameron Knight just needed a gamble or an outstretched leg to give the hosts a lead.

Glossop’s higher level credentials continued to provide them with the better chances. The 26 minute mark saw Reilly hit a rising 20 yard free kick that was pulled down by Naylor in the Dronfield goal.

Naylor was called into action again before the end of the half. On the half hour mark he made a useful save on the line from Glossop skipper Olly Parker’s header and Parker followed that up with an overhead kick that went just wide seven minutes later.

On the stroke of half time, the outstretched boot of James Lindores couldn’t turn a teasing ball from the left goalwards, leaving the game in the balance for the second period.

Dronfield began usefully for the first fifteen minutes after the break. On 57 minutes, Matty Ord cut inside from the left and hit a decent shot from the edge of the box that was turned round the post by Glossop custodian Alex Brown.

A triple substitution by the hosts failed to have the desired effect however as twenty minutes of madness saw Dronfield bombed out of the tie.

On 62 minutes, Tom Lawless broke free for Glossop, turned inside his man and saw his rather tame shot deflected into the goal to put the North West Counties side a goal to the good.

The second goal for the Hillmen was pretty horrific. Lawless appeared to be offside and offloaded to an even further offside Lewis Reilly, who tapped into the open goal to make it 2-0.

Dronfield could have no complaints with the third though. Lewis Naylor did well to save the initial effort as Town got carved apart but Lawless was there on the follow-up to tap home at 3-0.

A pair of Lewis Reilly penalties wrapped up the night for the visitors. The 78th minute saw him blast home his second goal of the night and with Town sub Jake Hatton bringing down GNE player manager Richard Brodie four minutes later, he claimed his hat-trick in similar fashion from 12 yards as the score became 5-0.

An evening to forget for the North East Derbyshire side but jubilation for the men from the High Peak as they move on to the third round of the competition. Dronfield’s sole focus is now the league, starting with the visit of Nostell MW to the HE Barnes Stadium on Saturday.
