REPORT: Denton secures Spireites away point

Despite an underwhelming first-half performance the Spireites went into the break level, courtesy of a Tom Denton header, but Chesterfield couldn’t do enough to grab a second half winner.

John Sheridan made 4 changes to the side that suffered a 4-0 thrashing at the weekend, with Shwan Jalal making a return in goal. Sam Wedgbury and Charlie Wakefield also came into the side for the first time in a while and Tom Denton made a return up front.

The home side took the lead in the 9th minute. The first corner of the game brought the first goal. Gime Toure at the back post headed toward goal for Peter Kioso to bundle over the line into the net.

Another opportunity came the way of Craig Higgnet’s side when Josh Hawkes had the ball in a dangerous position on the right of the goal, but Curtis Weston was there to clear the ball away from danger.

Will Evans made a clearance but if only fell as far as Mark Kitching who played it to Toure, but the Pools’ leading scorer’s effort was deflected out for a corner.

Ten minutes before the break, Holohan was played in down the right hand side, beating the Chesterfield defence to the ball and forcing Jalal to make a diving save.

But the away side found an equaliser in the 39th minute through Tom Denton, who bagged his first goal of the season, heading Gevaro’s corner into the back of the net past Pools’ ‘keeper Ben Killip.

It was all to play for at Victoria Park, with the scores level as the two teams headed into the second half.

In the 55th minute Joe Rowley had an opportunity to put his side ahead but his effort from just inside the box rolled wide of goal.

Wedgbury whipped a perfect ball into Denton at the back post, but it didn’t matter when he volleyed over, because the linesman had his flag up.

Denton should have had his second in the 73rd minute when he latched onto Rowley’s ball from the right firing just over the crossbar.

The game ended 1-1 which is a good result on paper but looking at Chesterfield’s current predicament, the club need wins to claw their way out of the relegation zone and up the table.
