Debutant Johnny Johnston grabbed two goals in a scintillating second half performance from The Bucks which saw them pick up all three points.
Following a slow start to the game, Finley Sinclair-Smith burst into life in the 15th minute, sprinting half the length of the pitch before delivering a dangerous cross into the box. However, no one was able to get on the end of it.
Buxton then responded immediately, with Luke Brennan attempting to curl a shot into the far corner. His effort, however, drifted wide of Marine goalkeeper Matty Corran.
Marine saw much of their attacking play come down the wings, with the ball frequently worked to Lewis Bell. Despite Bell’s delivery into the box, Buxton keeper True Grant was alert and dealt with the danger.
The next big chance fell to Leigh Whelan, who whipped in a free kick that found Joe Mattock. The defender’s glancing header, however, went straight into the hands of Grant.
Marine eventually broke the deadlock in the 32nd minute. Andy Scarisbrick sent a low ball into the box, where Enoch Lusiama arrived to tap it home and make it 1-0.
Their lead, however, was short-lived. Just five minutes later, Tommy Elliott’s deflected strike off a Marine defender looped onto the underside of the bar and was adjudged to have crossed the line as the sides went into the break level at 1-1.
Buxton started the second half brightly, with Ben Sault involved in two early chances. First, he delivered a dangerous cross into the box, which narrowly missed connecting with a striker. Moments later, he rattled the crossbar with a powerful shot from the edge of the area.
The Bucks continued to threaten and came close again when Josh Williams headed just wide from Connor Kirby’s corner.
Their persistence was finally rewarded in the 63rd minute. Dermi Lusala’s low ball into the area found its way to Brennan, who showed great composure before finding the back of the net to put Buxton 2-1 ahead.
Six minutes later, Elliott played a perfectly weighted through ball to debutant Johnston. The forward raced through and finished clinically into the corner to extend the lead to 3-1.
Johnston wasn’t finished there, adding his second just four minutes later. Linking up with Elliott again on the left-hand side, he slotted another composed finish into the corner to make it 4-1.
Buxton’s attacking intent didn’t waver even after the four goals. Substitute Diego De Girolamo saw a deflected shot safely gathered by the goalkeeper as The Bucks continued to dominate.
Buxton will now look to build on this emphatic win when they face fellow playoff contenders Darlington on Tuesday.
