On a cold bonfire night at the Tarmac Silverlands Stadium, Buxton picked up a 2-0 victory over Scarborough Athletic, taking full advantage after the visitors were reduced to ten men early in the first half. The Bucks captain Connor Kirby’s brace helped to secure all 3 points.
Buxton started brightly, immediately testing Scarborough’s defense. In the opening moments, Cian Coleman nearly found the net from the edge of the box after a setup from Josh Popoola, but his shot went just wide.
A minute later, the Bucks earned their first corner after Ben Sault’s close-range effort was deflected out, but the Seadogs managed to clear the danger.
Scarborough’s first significant chance came in the 15th minute when Frank Mulhern broke through and struck the side netting under pressure.
However, the momentum quickly shifted Buxton’s way three minutes later. Former Buxton player Alex Brown fouled Sault as he charged towards goal, and the referee showed no hesitation in brandishing a red card, leaving the visitors to face the majority of the game a man down.
The breakthrough finally arrived in the 44th minute. Sault’s persistence in the box won the hosts a penalty, and captain Connor Kirby confidently stepped up to dispatch it.
Despite the disadvantage, Scarborough came out determined in the second half and managed to create some promising moments.
In the 55th minute, Harry Green’s dangerous cross-shot nearly found the far corner, and Ritchie Bennett tested True Grant with a low drive seven minutes later, but the Buxton keeper was equal to the effort.
Buxton continued to pile on the pressure, and their persistence paid off in the 73rd minute. Popoola delivered a low cross, and Kirby was perfectly positioned to smash it home, doubling Buxton’s lead with his second goal of the evening and sealing the victory.
The Bucks continued the unbeaten run they have started to put together over the past couple of weeks as they moved into 5th in the league.
