NATIONAL LEAGUE NORTH REPORT: BUXTON SUFFER DEFEAT ON BANK HOLIDAY MONDAY

Buxton fell to a 2-1 defeat against Marine on Bank Holiday Monday, after 2 goals from Brad Holmes.

The game started evenly, with both teams having early chances to break the deadlock. Marine had the first real opportunity in the 4th minute, with a free kick from the edge of the box that was comfortably saved by Buxton's goalkeeper, True Grant. Buxton responded quickly, with a corner in the 6th minute that narrowly missed finding Kieran Burton in the box.

Another chance came in the 8th minute when Burton's shot from a Jack Stobbs free kick went wide.

The breakthrough came in the 10th minute for Marine. A free kick delivered into the Buxton box came to the Holmes who was quickest to react, scoring from close range to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.

Marine continued to press, with Kallan Murphy attempting an overhead kick in the 22nd minute, but his effort was easily gathered by Grant.

Josh Popoola tested Marine's keeper Luke Hutchinson shortly after, forcing him into a save with a powerful shot from a tight angle.

Marine doubled their lead just before half-time, with Holmes striking again in the 45th minute after a corner found its way to him at the back post. James Butler’s header was cleared off the line but fell kindlyto Holmes to nod in, leaving Buxton with a mountain to climb in the second half.

Buxton started the second half with renewed energy and got their reward in the 47th minute when Dejvan Pedro, introduced just minutes earlier, smashed a shot from the edge of the box to pull a goal back.

A passing play only minutes later between Pedro and Popoola was stopped with Leigh Whelan dragging the defender to the ground and picking up a yellow card.

Regan Griffiths tested Grant with Marine's first shot on target of the second half in the 86th minute, but the Buxton keeper was equal to it.

Marine held on for the win, leaving Buxton to reflect on a disappointing afternoon.

Buxton will look to bounce back quickly as they prepare for an away trip to Southport on Saturday.
