REPORT: Denton double delights Alfreton

A stunning second half, with two goals in two minutes, saw Alfreton record their first home win of the National League North season.

Tom Denton opened the scoring with a near post header from Callum Chettles corner, before Blyth skipper Robert Dale converted a penalty at the other end as Sam Ramsbottom was judged to have brought down Jamie Holmes.

Denton hit his double after the break, another header this time from Curtis Bateson's cross, from inside the six yard box.

Bateson took a free-kick two minutes later from a similar position, this time met by the oncoming Tom Platt who perfectly timed his run and header to make it 3-1.

Denton was denied his hat-trick moments later when he turned another Bateson cross goalwards, only to see his effort clawed off the line by keeper Peter Jameson.

Bateson had the chance to score himself before being substituted; a long ball over the top from Chettle saw him one-on-one, no flag, but his touch was heavy and cleared by Jameson.

Speaking after the game, Alfreton Boss Billy Heath was keen to emphasise the importance of performances.

"Every game's a battling performance. It's always a scrap. "I'm bitterly disappointed from Tuesday (90th minute defeat to Curzon Ashton). We did enough to win the game, easily. "It was massively important we got three points today."

Post-match verdict: A real battle of a performance.

Alfreton ran themselves ragged and were dominant throughout, much the same as Tuesday's rewardless last minute defeat.

They could have easily scored eight or nine this week over the two fixtures, and will do well this season with these kind of performances.
